Tokaj Regional Development Seminar

Every year since 2000, at the time of grape-harvest regional development professionals get together in Tokaj to attend and enjoy an exciting meeting. As the saying goes, whoever counts in regional development is present at this event, casually referred to as the "Tokaj Conference".

How did this conference start and become a major event in regional development? In the year of the Millennium more and more experts in the field of regional development felt and expressed their desire for a particular forum where the professionals of this field, unbiased by politics, could voice their opinion, discuss, share or even test their new ideas.

To answer this appreciable demand, MEGAKOM Development Consultants organized the first Tokaj International Regional Development Workshop Seminars in Tokaj - the city of grapes and wine - in October 2000. The first attempt turned out to be a success, and new events followed the first with a constantly increasing number of participants - as the regional development profession evolved - and with unbroken popularity. By today the Tokaj Conference has become the prestigious annual meeting of professionals of regional development.

What makes this conference different from the multitude of events organized every year?

  • It is an exclusive conference, based on personal invitations, focusing on professionals, without the need for increasing the number of participants at any price;
  • It is not a conference for politicians: no politicians are invited either as speakers, or participants. As a result, speakers raise important issues in high-quality presentations, general political statements, campaign speeches have no place at the conference.
  • The conference is interactive, providing ample opportunity for, and even fostering real debates between the speakers and the audience.
  • The various leisure activities accompanying the conference (lunch with wine-tasting, unique quiz show) provide ideal feel-good conditions for networking activities, aand even for peaceful settling of professional conflicts.

    Each conference has been built around a central topic, addressing various key issues of the Hungarian regional policy at the time of Hungary's accession to the EU:

    I.     International Regional Development Conference in Tokaj - October 12-13, 2000: "Independent views on the regional policy of Hungary and the EU."
